What is your favorite part about teaching people how to surf?
I think the best thing is when the student is sketchy about surfing and the water, but is taking the lesson because a friend sort of pushed them into it.  They are a little scared at first, but then you can't get them out of the water at the end.  Then they are asking for more lessons and your availability.

But I'll take any tropical wave anywhere in the world anytime!

Places you have traveled for surfing? Cabo San Lucas, all along the CA coast.

Local Surf spots/Favorite surf spot?  Blacks, The Jetty, Avalanche, Windansea

How did you get into surfing?  I've always loved the ocean.  My mom would take me down to the beach nearly everyday to bodysurf or bodyboard when I was growing up.  Snowboarding and skateboarding were also two of my favorite passions, so surfing was a natural progression.

What is your favorite part about teaching people how to surf? Successfully helping students ride the face! Although it is often for beginners to learn riding the white water of wave, I believe it gives many the wrong impression about surfing.  Most surfing is done on the unbroken part of a wave (the face) which can be ridden much longer, faster and is atually a bit easier because momentum keeps the board more stable.  I thoroughly enjoy seeing the excitement on a student's face after going down the line and truly riding a wave.

Where would your dream surf trip be/what type of wave/what boards would you bring, etc?   I love all waves of all shapes and most sizes (preferably under 14') as well as all boards of all shapes, sizes, and fun configurations (including finless) so I would be more than stoked to go on a surf trip anywhere, as I have only ever been on one, I do prefer head- high uncrowded, barreling, A-frame reef breaks if I get to choose though.

What are some of your other hobbies/interests?
Rock Climbing, woodcraft, art, reading, backpacking.

Where did you attend School? I attended high school at High Tech High International in Point Loma, San Diego.  I am currently attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Time Surfing: about 21 years minus a few when I competed in college as a soccer player. Seriously surfing for the last five years.

Places you have traveled for surfing? South Africa, Fiji, Indonesia, Costa Rica, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, Peru, all over California, and in parts of Hawaii, Florida, South Carolina, and Georgia.

Local Surf spots/Favorite surf spot?   Bird Rock, La Jolla;  Raglan, New Zealand; Nosara, Costa Rica or wherever I am in the world.

How did you get into surfing?
Izzy taught me to surf when I was about 12 years old. As soon as she started Surf Diva, I started pushing people into waves when I was about 16 or 17. About half my life later, it’s still my favorite job.

What is your favorite part about teaching people how to surf?
As much as I love that feeling of getting a good ride, there’s no better feeling than seeing that glow in someone’s eyes when they catch their first wave. Plus, I’ve seen people transform their lives after learning to surf. They quit their jobs, pursue a new passion, end bad relationships, embark on new ones and gain confidence that you can’t teach any other way.

Where would your dream surf trip be/what type of wave/what boards would you bring, etc?  I have been itching to get to Tahiti or to the Maldives. I’d take my Surf Diva sunfish, a Rusty Slayer, the Surf Diva Sea Gypsy, a SUP, a fun alaia to mess around on and of course I’d take my favorite surf Divas and Surf Diva alumni! And my boyfriend because I really like surfing with him. After all, I met him in the water.

What are some of your other hobbies/interests?  Running, yoga, writing, volunteering as a board member for Outdoor Outreach, a nonprofit that teaches inner city kids to surf, snowboard, rock climb and mountain bike on the basis that self esteem can’t be taught. It must be learned.

Where did you attend School?  La Jolla High School and then Emory University.

What is a fun fact/something unique about you? I quit my lucrative marketing job in 2009 to be a journalist and to surf more. Since then, I have been lucky to travel all over the world for stories and have met some amazing people from famous CEOs to world-class athletes. I haven’t looked back since. Oh, I was named after a Sea Monster on TV.  I like the sea and I am a bit of a monster about needing/wanting to surf every day. I guess there could be worse things about myself ;)

What is your favorite part about teaching people how to surf?  I love how stoked everyone always is.  The instructors and students are always havinga  good time.  It is a nice feeling when you can work and have fun doing it.

Where would your dream surf trip be/what type of wave/what boards would you bring, etc?   It would be Puerto Escondido in Mexico known as the Mexican Pipline.  With four different waves to choose from, I would bring as many boards as I could.  Although I always love riding big boards in big waves.

What are some of your other hobbies/interests?  I've always loved painting and art in general.  I try and paint as much as I can.  Photography is also something I admire.  I love my film camera and take it with me on every trip.
What is a fun fact/something unique about you? I like to collect vinyl records.  Music always sounds better on vinyl.
