  • Equipment
  • Do you rent surfboards or wetsuits?
Yes! We offer rentals on a first come first serve basis in our boutique. You can rent both a board and a wetsuit for a half day ($25) or a full day ($50). You can also rent the board only for $10 an hour or a wetsuit only for $6 an hour.

  • What do I bring to class at Surf Diva?
Bring what you would take for a normal few hours at the beach: sunscreen, comfortable swimsuit (either one or two-piece), towel, board shorts, hair tie, sunglasses, sweatshirt, hat, drinking water, and a light snack.
  • How early should I show up for my class?
We suggest arriving at the Surf Diva boutique at least a 1/2 hour before your lesson to check in. Allow time to find a parking space as La Jolla can get very busy and parking is limited. The instructors arrive right as class time begins.
  • What do I do if I wear contacts?
If you wear disposable ones, you are okay. Otherwise, wear an old pair and close your eyes tightly when underwater. You may also want to use swim goggles. These are suggestions from other Divas who surf.
  • What kind of swimsuit do I wear?
Whatever you can move around in comfortably. Remember, you are going to be very active. In the warmer summer months you may want to bring along a pair or boardshorts (surf trunks) in case you do not need a westsuit. May - September are warm-water months when wetsuits are optional.
  • "I don't think you will have wetsuit for me because I am an extra large or extra small person."
No worries. We ask that all students give us their size so that we can make arrangements for a proper wetsuit for you (sizes range from XS to XXL).
  • Can I keep the equipment to use after the class is over?
You cannot keep your equipment after the lesson is finished, but you can rent a board and/or wetsuit from our Surf Diva Boutique.

  • Preparation
  • What is the best way to help my body prepare for surfing?
Swimming is great. Push-ups, sit-ups, and yoga are all extremely helpful. Training on a skateboard is a fun way to practice your stance and balance, not to mention great exercise and transportation.
  • How good of a swimmer do I need to be?
You should be a competent swimmer (able to swim 200 yards) and be comfortable in the ocean.

  • Facilities and Getting There
  • What facilities are near the La Jolla Shores Beach?
There are several lifeguard stations, restrooms, showers, and public phones at the beach. There is a large parking area, but it fills up early. Within walking distance, there are hotels, convenience stores, a few shops, and restaurants. Check out this website for other info on the La Jolla area. www.lajolla.com
  • Can you recommend a place to stay nearby?
Based on your budget and whether or not you have a car you have several options. The closest hotel to our lessons is The Sea Lodge (right on the beach!). A mile up hill in "The Village" are several hotels (some with ocean views).

  • What about camping?
About 8 miles away to the south is the "Campland on the Bay" (800.422.9386). There are a lot of RV's at this spot. Traffic from Campland to Surf Diva can be congested during the summer season. North of La Jolla in Cardiff the San Elijo State Beach has camping facilities. They book up fast, so register ahead of time.

    1. San Diego International Airport (800.235.9292) is about 15 minutes from La Jolla.
    2. John Wayne Airport is about 1 1/2 hours from La Jolla.
