When is the best time to travel to Costa Rica?

We run camps in Costa Rica from November through July. These are the best months to go, because it is not the rainy season and the weather is generally very pleasant.  Starting in June it may start to rain in the afternoons, but you'll still be able to get in some good surf sessions.

I want to come to Costa Rica, but I would be traveling on my own. Do many women attend the Surf Diva Costa Rica Surf Adventure on their own?

Yes!!!  We have many women who go on our Costa Rica trip solo.  You won't be alone for long, though. You're bound to meet lots of new surfer friends on your adventure.

Is there a maximum age? Is there a minimum age?

Surfers going on the Costa Rica adventure must be at least 18, unless it is a designated family retreat. There is no maximum age. Always feel free to give us a call, to find out more about the fellow ladies in your retreat.

Do I need a passport to travel to Costa Rica?

You will need a passport with 6 months validity to enter & leave the country.

What about insurances, do I really need them?

We strongly urge you to get a trip protection plan, once you booked your flight and you paid the deposit or the full amount for your retreat. These types of plans protect you in any case, you can’t go on your trip or the trip is interrupted.

It is mandatory to get a travel insurance while traveling to Costa Rica with the Divas?

You will be asked to put down your insurance plan details in your packet upon departure. These types of plans protect and help you in any kind of medical or personal emergency while you are on your trip.

Do I need any special vaccination to travel to Costa Rica?

Please refer to the recommendation of the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention.

Can men join the Costa Rica Retreats?

Men can join our co-ed and family retreats.

What happens if the surf conditions are not good for surfing?

Occasionally, conditions can be unsafe to surf in.  In this case the session will be postponed until the winds or tides change for the better.  Surf Diva is not responsible for any missed lessons due to wave conditions.  We will do our best to reschedule the missed lesson and alternative activities will be suggested.

Where exactly in Costa Rica are you located?

We surf on the Pacific side of Costa Rica near Nicoya.  The name of the town is Nosara.  One of the beauties of this beach is that it is so uncrowded and we want to do our best to keep it that way.  Once you are signed up, we will let you know where it is so you can let your family and friends know where you will be!

Which airport do I fly into?

The included Surf Diva shuttle only does pick-ups at the airport in Liberia, though there is ways to organize a transport from San Jose or other destinations in Costa Rica to Nosara at your own cost. Please ask your Destinations Diva for more information!

What time should I book my flight to Costa Rica?  How about the return flight?

Our Surf Diva shuttle will pick you up in Liberia at 2 pm, so you would want your flight to arrive before 1:30 pm on the morning the retreat starts.  If there are not flights that land early Sunday morning, you can always book a flight to arrive the day before and stay the night in Liberia.

Our shuttle will return you to the Liberia airport by 11:30 am on the last day of the retreat.  To allow enough time for customs, please book a flight for after 1:00 pm.

What are the climate and the conditions like in Costa Rica?

It is dry season from mid November through late May with temperatures in the 80ies. In February and March there are occasional strong offshore winds. April through July can have scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon or at night. Nosara has consistent waves year round.

What is the average water temperature?

Water temperatures in Costa Rica range from the high 70's to mid 80's.

What if I have no surf experience?

The retreats are designed for beginning to advanced surfers.  Just let the Destinations Diva know your ability level when you sign up.

What if I do not speak Spanish?

You don’t have to be fluent in Spanish. Your retreat counselor will organize your reservations for you and everybody who works in tourism speaks English – However it is always helpful and diva-like to know some important phrases.

What can I do to get in shape before I join the Costa Rica Surf Adventure?

Any exercise you can do to get yourself in shape will be beneficial. More specifically, you can practice yoga, run, do pushups, swim, skateboard, or snowboard.  For more great surfing and fitness tips check out Surf Diva: A Girl's Guide to Getting Good Waves by Izzy and Coco Tihanyi.
